ExIStA-YSS: Early-Career Stats Showcase

On the evening of Wednesday 11th February 2015, ExIStA joined forces with the Young Statisticians Section (YSS) of the Royal Statistical Society to host a special Early-Career Stats Showcase at the University of Exeter. The aim of the event was to showcase the work of career-young statisticians – or those using statistics in their everyday jobs – based in the South West.

The evening began with a series of eight-minute talks from eight speakers whose professions spanned the statistical spectrum, giving a unique insight into the variety of different careers that are available, and a flavour of the current challenges and future trends within each area.

The speakers were:

  • Daniel Williamson, Lecturer in Statistics, University of Exeter – The exciting life of an academic statistician
  • Ven Perera, The Learning Clinic – The Virtual Hospital
  • Grace Stirling, ATASS Sports – Statistical modelling of sports: Dynamic, data-rich... and difficult!
  • Tom Fricker, Statistical Consultant, Select Statistics – Working as a Statistical Consultant
  • Travis Coan, Q-Step – Selling statistics to undergraduate social science students
  • Laura Pankhurst, NHS Blood and Transplant – The importance of statistics in organ donation and transplantation
  • Chrissy Donaldson, Sparx – Sparx: Illuminating Learning
  • Roger Harbord, Verification Scientist, Met Office - Evaluating accuracy: from medical tests to weather forecasts

These short talks were followed by a panel Q&A session with the speakers. The pre-event coffee & biscuits were kindly sponsored by Select Statistics.

The evening concluded with a wine reception, where there was plenty of free wine and cheese, plus a host of other snacks, all kindly sponsored by ATASS Sports. This provided the ideal opportunity for networking with other career-young statisticians in the local area, and to quiz the speakers further.
