Early Career Event

Our first event aimed at those at the beginning of their career was held on October 17th 2012 from 4-6pm.

This event is specifically for anyone in academia, public sector and industry who are early in their career and use statistics in their work and aimed at providing them with an opportunity to meet others at the same stage in their career.  We expect those who are currently in or within five years of postgraduate study to be interested in attending, but there are no hard and fast rules!

The agenda is as follows:

16:00 - 16:10 Welcome & Introduction

16:10 - 16:30 Dr Theo Economou: Extreme Storminess: How deep can lows get in space and time?

Understanding the behaviour of extra-tropical cyclones of extreme intensity is important both from a scientific but also a re-insurance perspective. We investigate storm tracks from a re-analysis data set and wish to quantify the behaviour of intensity both in space and time. To that end, spatio-temporal extreme value models are implemented to storm pressure nadirs in order to make inference and understand the behaviour of extreme lows.

16:30 - 16:50 Dr Adriana Cornea: Reliable Inference in Conditions of Extreme Events

Reliable statistical inference in conditions of extreme events is one of the hardest tasks in economics and finance. Often statistical inference is based on the normal distribution. But with the normal distribution extreme events are less likely to occur. In this talk, I will focus on designing new statistical tools that allow for correct inference in the presence of extreme events. In particular, I will talk about transforming and bootstrapping the statistic of interest negatively affected by extremes. Our results could be used not only in finance and economics, but also in areas like climate change (both physical phenomena like temperature changes and financial models like carbon-trading valuations), epidemics, internet traffic and a host of other applications.
